Light and Shade

When some painters in the 19th century started working outdoors, they learned one thing: there is no pure black in nature (unless you burn it down so that only charcoal remains). So, if there is no black, there is no black and white. Instead, there is light and shade. And even if every color becomes brighter in the light and darker in the shade, it always remains one and the same color. Or, perhaps it doesn’t, because the light creates color in the first place. But at least it remains one and the same texture, one and the same surface, one and the same thing. Light and shade in music are major and minor.
